ENGINES

“Wow they’ve got some power in that thing!”

Go to any race track and you’ll hear someone saying they’d be able to win if they only had more engine power! Whilst it’s important to maintain your engine(s) correctly, SEK Racing uses a strictly controlled, sealed Honda GX200 engine format that ensures parity whilst reducing costs.

In this section we’ll incorporate the Clutch and Exhaust as part of the engine unit, although in practice those items are purchased (and maintained) separately.

Here are some things that it helps to know about the engines, clutches and exhausts used in the SEK Endurance Series: “

Honda GX200 Engines are the only engines currently eligible for use in SEK Competition. Engines for the SEK series (both QLD and NSW) are purchased as a sealed component, prepared by SEK’s authorised agent to race-ready specifications.

There are 3 types of Honda GX200’s eligible for competition in SEK events. All engines are in parity; however depending on which engines you have, you should be aware that you can’t use carburettors from the other type engines on a different engine. Full details are in the SEK Rule Book.

MAINTENANCE

The Honda GX200 is a tremendously reliable engine, provided it’s maintained correctly.

Here are a few things you should do regularly to ensure ongoing reliability and performance:

OIL CHANGE

You should ideally change your engine oil after every event. The GX200 has a relatively low oil capacity so the cost of changing oil is minimal, with the benefits being significant. There are a wide range of oils that are suitable for the GX200, however many SEK competitors use a fully-synthetic 5 or 10W/30 oil. The only exception to this is when the engine is brand new. Mineral (non-synthetic) oil should be used for the first hour or so to ‘run in’ a brand-new engine, .

Important tip: When changing your oil, don’t forget to rewire the filler and drain plugs to ensure they can’t come undone on track. This will also be checked in Scrutineering.

VALVE CLEARANCES

Checking (and where necessary) adjusting valve clearances is another easy task to do that will assist not only reliability, but performance. Over time, valve clearances can change slightly and when they do, this slightly changes the time at which the valve opens or closes. Whilst the variation is minor, in a controlled-engine class, every detail matters.

THROTTLE

Check your throttle cables, thottle plates and throttle position to ensure there is no excessive wear and that your throttle opens and closes fully (on each engine). Making sure both engine throttles operate at the same time is another small and often overlooked detail that can impact performance. It costs nothing but time to check, so make sure you get this important element of your race prep right!

SEK Endurance Racing Series require that each engine must be fitted with a dry air-cooled Noram GE centrifugal clutch, which cannot be adjusted whilst fitted to the motor.

Whilst they’re a control component, the Noram GE clutch has a range of adjustability, including differing spring tensions and clutch shoe settings.

  • Clutches will be used to transmit the drive with a maximum engagement speed of not more than 2,500 rpm engine speed.
  • The clutch must have a drive sprocket of 20 teeth.
  • Only standard Noram clutch springs are permitted for use.
  • Only standard Noram GE heavy clutch shoes with no modifications are permitted.
  • Only standard genuine Noram clutch hubs are permitted.
  • Noram Magnum Clutch Drum may be used.

SEK competition currently has 2 type of exhausts available for competition (a 2-year transition is underway between ‘old’ and ‘new’ exhaust types). Both exhausts exhibit similar performance.

Exhausts are a control component designed to ensure maximum longevity, parity of performance and containment of costs.

Exhausts may be purchased directly through SEK QLD or SEK NSW
