RACE WEIGHT
The SEK Queensland Series regulations require a minimum combined weight for Karts and Drivers of 185kg.
Given most drivers will be of a different weight to their team mates, SEK Teams commonly utilise weight boxes or similar to enable the addition (or removal) of weight depending on which driver is in the kart at any given time.
There are two ways to manage weight:
- Add weight permanently through attaching it to the seat or chassis (please refer to the SEK Rulebook for guidelines)
- Add weight temporarily for each driver (must also conform to the SEK Rulebook)
Ensuring you weigh your kart and drivers (each combination) prior to the event is an important component of determining your approach to the race, and can even impact strategy if you consider that fuel adds weight to the kart, so a full tank at the start of the race (or just after a refueling stop) will mean the kart weighs more than when the tank is close to empty. Depending on the size of the tank this can be up to an ~8kg difference.
The other consideration with weight is finding a system that doesn’t delay you too long when changing drivers during pit stops.
There are a variety of systems used by Teams, so don’t hesitate to ask if you need any advice or assistance in finding the right solution for your team.
The final thing to consider is that the penalty for being underweight is considerable, and whilst the scales at each track are calibrated, it’s possible they might vary slightly. Therefore we’d encourage you to ensure you read the SEK Rule Book and make sure you have a clear understanding of your kart and driver weights prior to each race event.
