Why race with SEK?
The answer to that is simple – Come and Try it and you’ll understand why the SEK QLD is amongst the most cost-effective motorsport you can participate it. Beyond that, it’s great fun: competitive, social and challenging but with plenty of people to support you.
As a team-sport, costs are able to be shared across team members. In other forms of Motorsport where you compete as an individual, you are incurring all costs yourself. Every SEK event requires a minimum of 2 drivers, so costs can be spread across the team. Races of 8 hours or more require 3 drivers and special events like a 24 hour race require a minimum of 5 drivers,
With the amount of on-track time you get in an SEK event (at a minimum you’ll have around 6 hours of on-track time (and this is usually race time as a minimum, plus practice and qualifying), the time each driver gets to drive is well beyond most individual karting events with a lower cost base per person.
Add the challenges and excitement that Enduro Karting presents in the form of strategy, pit and fuel stops, safety cars etc. and it’s hard to find a better value proposition in any form of Motorsport.
Drivers
Races are generally between 6-12 hours duration for the Queensland Series and require 2 or 3 drivers (minimum). You can run as many drivers as you like in a team. Each race duration has a minimum number of drivers (listed in the SEK QLD Rule Book).
Race Formats
The SEKQLD Series focuses on Endurance Karting, with each race event generally having a race duration of between 6 and 12 hours. There are some exceptions where we may host shorter or longer events (up to 24 hours), however the majority of the series comprises 6 to 12 hour races. Every event has practice and qualifying, with the formats varied to keep it interesting for participants and spectators alike.
Teamwork
Fact: You cannot go it alone in endurance racing.
Every kart on the track at an SEKQLD event is run by a team. This feature makes endurance racing totally unique from other forms of kart racing whereby it would normally only be one driver competing for the prize.
The make up of your team and how many people you have in it are up to you. Not every team member has to be a driver for example (some may opt to mechanic), and some groups may be large enough to field a two or even three kart presence on the track.
Whatever your preference, the camaraderie you build with your teammates is an important factor in this sport and many lifelong friendships have been established between series participants.
Driver/Pit Communication
Keeping your teammates in the loop as the race unfolds is crucial for success in endurance racing and this can be done in a variety of ways.
For some teams a cheap, yet effective set of signs may be used to signal a driver to pit or alert them to the presence of the Safety Kart.
Many teams make use of pit to kart radios. These are typically either a Bluetooth motorcycle intercom system, with popular brands including Cardo, Blueant and SENA. Headsets are simply converted hearing protection head-sets with a bluetooth radio mounted.
Alternatively a UHF radio setup may be used.
Strategy
Having a race strategy is a must in endurance racing and a failure to plan out the race might see a team make crucial errors of judgement that may result in unnecessary time lost.
Items like knowing when to pit, which drivers are to go into the kart at a particular stage of the race and when to take on fuel are commonplace on a typical team’s strategy.
Some teams have their own customised race plan documents to help them with this process, however a simple pen and paper with the race schedule on it is a tried and true method for keeping track of who should be pitting and when.
Whatever your preference, getting in the habit of planning your race out is the difference between taking the prize or going home empty handed.
Driver Changes
Driver swaps are where an endurance racing team will pit their kart in order to take one pilot out and substitute them for another racing team member.
It is this feature that makes racing for extended periods of time manageable and is therefore strategically very important for teams to time correctly. Factors like fatigue, race traffic and individual driver characteristics will determine when the optimum time to make a pit stop is.
SEKQLD’s rules are set up to ensure both driver safety at all times, as well as fairness throughout the field. For this reason, as part of the driver swaps rules it is mandated that teams:
Must take at least one driver stop per racing hour;
Must not allow one driver to drive for an excessive period of time without pitting (this is stipulated in each event’s race rules); and
Must have the correct minimum number of drivers participating (the number of drivers you need is based on the race length and may be 2-5).
Tyre Changes
Although not required at every race on the SEKQLD calendar, changing tyres on the fly is an important part of endurance racing.
Teams will typically only change tyres when they need to, be it through excessive tyre wear (very rarely) or because the weather conditions have changed.
Changing tyres in Endurance Racing can often be a critical component to success, with leading team’s trying to not only turn their karts around as quickly as possible, but select the best time to stop.
Refuelling
To finish first, first you must finish as the old saying goes. And you’re not going to be finishing any time soon without fuel.
Of course safety is our primary concern, so all refuelling stops are completed to a set time using an electronic timer, and are completed by an SEKQLD official. In addition the series has spill kits and fire extinguishers on hand should there be any issue.
The timing of a fuel stop can often be make or break for a team’s strategy. Pit too early and you mightn’t have enough fuel to make it to the end, and have to take an extra stop. Pit too late and you may find yourself having to queue for fuel, losing valuable time to your competitors.
Membership
To race in SEK Competition you need to be a club member. You can join SEKQLD today for only $50 per year. All drivers in our series must be a financial member of SEK QLD, and we would also encourage all Team Managers and Mechanics to join as well. Membership is open to all.
The Membership year runs from January 1 to December 31. If you are joining after June 30 a 50% discount will apply to all memberships. (i.e. $25 for the remainder of the year).
Click here to become a Member.
Once you’re a Member of SEK QLD your team drivers will need to obtain a Licence.
What’s it cost to get started?
There are several ways to be involved, you can choose our “Come and Try” Package (click here for details), join an existing team or start your own team.
Pre-owned Kart and Engine packages are regularly available for sale and you’ll often find them listed on our website and others, including some Facebook “Buy and Sell” groups from as little as $3000. It’s important to note though that some Honda engines fitted to some of these karts have not been sealed in accordance with SEK regulations (we do this to ensure parity and to contain costs). If you’re unsure or need any advice or assistance, please get in touch with us for guidance.
New SEK sealed engines are $700 each and SEK (both QLD and NSW) keep a database of engine and seal numbers to ensure compliance and parity.
You can also buy a used chassis and fit new engines, or buy a brand new chassis (from any twin-engine chassis supplier) and fit new/used SEK-sealed engines.
SEK QLD Class Structure
SEK QLD will run 2 classes in 2025:
- Maxx Class
- Sportsman Class
Every team will be entered in the Outright (MAXX) Class. Some teams may also be eligible to enter the Sportsman Class, which is essentially a sub-category or ‘race within a race’ for Teams that are continuing to improve their performance. It affords eligible Teams the opportunity to race for a Class Win whilst still competing for Outright honours.
The Class your Team will be eligible to enter is dependent on several key factors. Whilst every Team will compete for outright honours, some Teams will be precluded from entering the Sportsman class due to past performances, as detailed below.
MAXX Classification means a Team can only compete for outright results (for races and the Championship) and is assigned to Teams who have:
- Won a Championship in the past 5 Seasons in either SEK QLD or SEK NSW Competition and where 50% of more of the driver combination remains unchanged from when that success was achieved
- Have attained more than 2 round wins in a single season where at least 50% of the Driver Lineup remains as it was when those wins were achieved
- Has achieved a Top 3 in the outright series classification for any given season and where 50% of more of the driver combination remains unchanged from when that success was achieved
- A combination of 2 drivers (or more) who have previously met the above criteria in different teams and are now competing in the same Team
All other Teams are eligible to enter in the Sportsman Category.
The winner of the Sportsman category at each round will be determined by the highest finishing Sportsman Team, regardless of where that Team’s outright finishing position may be.
Please note:
Trophies for the Sportsman Category will only be presented at an event when the class has a total of 3 or more entries. Trophies will be awarded as follows:
1st Place only: 3 entries
1st and 2nd: 4-5 entries
1st, 2nd and 3rd positions: 6 or more entries in the Sportsman Class.
It is important to note that Sportsman Teams can also win the outright (MAXX) Category and are awarded points for both Championships.
Championship Tables will exist for the outright competition (reflecting outright results for all competitors including the Sportsman Class), and a dedicated Sportsman Class Championship table will also be presented.
Please note that the same criteria for event trophies apply to Championship Trophies at the end of the Season.
SEK QLD reserves the right to review Sportsman Eligibility criteria in circumstances where the intent of the rule is not being met by any Team/Entrant.
Trophies
Trophies are presented at each round to 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the outright Class.
Separate trophies are also available for the Sportsman Class (refer “SEK QLD Class Structure” on this page for details).
